VI COMMANDO

Bdr. Joseph Albert George "Joe" Evans

(S/N 905729)

Bdr. Joseph Albert George “Joe” Evans, formerly of the 139th Field Regiment Royal Artillery, served with No.6 Commando from 1941 until, at least, 22nd November 1942.

He is noted as having been captured in North Africa and was interned as PoW No. 153503 in Stalag XVIIA Kaisersteinbruck bei Bruck (Leitha) Camp in Austria. Stalag XV11A was a particularly brutal PoW camp, mainly for Russian PoWs, where prisoners where routinely used for slave labour and starved.  Here over 9,500 Russian PoWs died from starvation and neglect.
